Zadar is one of the most interesting and oldest urban sites in the Mediterranean, permanently inhabited since the 9th century BC.
The ancient city of Iadera was also a Roman colony that gained features of a city that are visible even today. You will visit the remains of the Roman Forum, the largest one built in Croatia, and find out what it looked like when it functioned as the city’s main square.
Due to its strategic position, in the heart of the Adriatic, Zadar appealed many foreign conquerors, and it was the capital of Dalmatia Province from the fall of the Western Roman Empire until the end of the First World War. The city was ruled by the Venetians, Austrians, Napoleon and Italians. All that left mark not only in city’s history but also in the gastronomy, language and its tradition.
You will walk down Kalelarga, the main and most famous street in the city, which is often said to be older than the city itself.
Stand in front of the symbol of the city, the church of St. Donatus, which stands here since the 9th century, and you see Zadar’s cathedral dedicated to St. Anastasia.
Listen to the story of the city’s defensive walls built by the Venetian Republic in the 16th century for protection from the Ottomans and visit the picturesque port of Foša with its beautiful Renaissance Land Gate.
Zadar is known for its world-famous Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun located on the Riva. You will listen to a unique melody played by the sea while the guide will tell you the most interesting facts about these modern installations.
After a walk through the old town, you will taste Zadar’s Maraschino, which has been traditionally produced in Zadar for 5 centuries. This unique liqueur with a rich taste is produced from the autochthonous Dalmatian type of maraschino cherry, and it is adorned with the epithet “king of liqueurs”.
