Plitvice lakes National park is the oldest and the largest national park in Croatia and one of the most beautiful natural sights of Europe known around the globe. It is famous for 16 turquoise-colored lakes connected by travertine barriers that create amazing waterfalls.
The growth of travertine barriers in Plitvice lakes are unique case in entire world. The world average growth of travertine barriers is only couple of centimeters in every 30 years, while, in Plitvice lakes National Park, travertine barriers grow 30 to 90 centimeters in same time period. That’s why Plitvice are called ‘Land Where the Stones Grow’.
The biggest and deepest lake is Kozjak. Entire area of Plitvice Lakes became part of the UNESCO very early on, since 1979. The name of the Park comes from the word “plitvice”, pličine” which means a shallow basin.

Plitvice lakes tour starts when a guide picks you up from the start point. You will drive through picturesque villages of mountainous part of Croatia. Plitvice are about 1-and-a-half-hour drive away from Zadar. Once you get to Plitvice National park the guide will take you in a circular tour through the park. You will be amazed by emerald-green lakes, rocky caves, and cascading waterfalls that are on every step of the way. Stand in front of 78 m high waterfall named ‘Veliki slap’ (Eng. Great Waterfall) one of the park’s main attractions and ride in electric boat across the Kozjak lake, which is the largest lake in the park. The guide will tell you a story about how Plitvice were created by Black queen, you will find out where are the best viewpoints and walk through the best route in the park.
After the guided tour you will have plenty of free time to explore and relax.
In the afternoon you will return to Zadar and this trip will end.
