{"id":51735,"date":"2020-11-10T14:50:10","date_gmt":"2020-11-10T13:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/?p=51735"},"modified":"2022-05-28T13:02:58","modified_gmt":"2022-05-28T11:02:58","slug":"croatia-unesco-world-heritage-sites-and-intangible-cultural-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/en\/croatia-unesco-world-heritage-sites-and-intangible-cultural-heritage\/","title":{"rendered":"Croatia&#8217;s UNESCO World Heritage sites and Intangible Cultural Heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<a href=\"https:\/\/croatia.hr\/en-GB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">Croatia<\/span><\/a> is one of the few countries in the world that can boast with many tangible and intangible cultural heritage in such a small area.\u00a0A total of 27 assets are under <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">UNESCO protection<\/span><\/a>, of which are 10 tangible properties and 17 intangible cultural goods.<\/p>\n<p>Check out a list of tangible and intangible assets that are under the protection of UNESCO in order to get an insight into how culturally rich Croatia is and certainly worth a visit.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Croatia&#8217;s UNESCO World Heritage Sites:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5>1.\u00a0Old city of Dubrovnik<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56663\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Dubrovnik-croatia-unesco-site.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Dubrovnik-croatia-unesco-site.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Dubrovnik-croatia-unesco-site-768x558.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Dubrovnik-croatia-unesco-site-600x436.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tzdubrovnik.hr\/lang\/en\/index.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">Dubrovnik<\/span><\/span><\/a>, the &#8220;Pearl of the Adriatic&#8221;, is a symbol of Croatian tourism and the most famous and most visited city in Croatia.\u00a0Its medieval city walls and towers are widely recognized. Within the walls there are valuable cultural and historical palaces and churches, the most famous of which is the church of St. Blaise, city&#8217;s patron saint that is being especcially revered in Dubrovnik.\u00a0Although the city was damaged in a terrible earthquake in 1667, it managed to preserve its rich cultural and historical sites.\u00a0The Old Town of Dubrovnik has been on the UNESCO\u00a0World Heritage List since 1979.<\/p>\n<h5>2. Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of DiocletianIt<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56662\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/diocletian-palace-split-croatia-unesco.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/diocletian-palace-split-croatia-unesco.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/diocletian-palace-split-croatia-unesco-768x570.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/diocletian-palace-split-croatia-unesco-600x445.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Diocletian&#8217;s palace is situated in <a href=\"https:\/\/visitsplit.com\/en\/1\/welcome-to-split\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">Split<\/span><\/span><\/a> and it is one of the best preserved buildings of this kind in the world, therefore it has been inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979.\u00a0It was built between the 3rd century BC and the 4th century AD, by Roman emperor Diocletian for its retirement, a he he eventually died in the palace.\u00a0Cathedral of St. Domnius, which was built on the remains of a mausoleum, as well as Romanesque churches, medieval fortifications, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque palaces are also under UNESCO protection.<\/p>\n<h5>3. Plitvice lakes National park<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/np-plitvicka-jezera.hr\/en\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56233\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/national-park-plitvice-croatia-unesco.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/national-park-plitvice-croatia-unesco.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/national-park-plitvice-croatia-unesco-768x568.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/national-park-plitvice-croatia-unesco-600x444.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/np-plitvicka-jezera.hr\/en\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">Plitvice lakes National park<\/span><\/span><\/a> is, along with Dubrovnik, one of the symbols of Croatia and the oldest national park in Croatia.\u00a0Plitvice Lakes National Park is a complex of 16 large and smaller lakes,\u00a0that cascade one into another and\u00a0create beautiful waterfalls.\u00a0The basic feature of this park are travertine barriers that have been forming for thousands of years that created this complex of lakes, waterfalls and caves. In the surrounding woods live rare plant species and animals.\u00a0The national park was included in the UNESCO List in 1979.<\/p>\n<h5>4.\u00a0Historic city of Trogir<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56661\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/old-town-trogir-croatia-unesco.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/old-town-trogir-croatia-unesco.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/old-town-trogir-croatia-unesco-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/old-town-trogir-croatia-unesco-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The history of the city of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visittrogir.hr\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">Trogir<\/span><\/a> dates back to 2000 BC, which makes Trogir one of the oldest cities in the Mediterranean.\u00a0Its foundations date back to the Illyrian, Hellenistic and Roman periods, and due to its exceptional cultural and historical importance, the entire old city was included in the 1997 UNESCO World Heritage List.\u00a0In addition to many Romanesque churches and Baroque and Gothic buildings, Trogir&#8217;s Cathedral stands out with Master Radovan&#8217;s portal, which is one of the most significant examples of Romanesque-Gothic art in Croatia.<\/p>\n<h5>5.\u00a0Episcopal Complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in the Historic Centre of Pore\u010d<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56660\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/porec-basilica-croatia-unesco.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/porec-basilica-croatia-unesco.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/porec-basilica-croatia-unesco-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/porec-basilica-croatia-unesco-600x449.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cathedral complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myporec.com\/en\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">Pore\u010d<\/span><\/span><\/a> has been the center of spirituality and faith for centuries.\u00a0Its unique early Christian and Byzantine architecture is an example of excellent world-class artistic expression.\u00a0Entire\u00a0complex was built on the site of a former 4th-century oratory and includes a church, atrium, baptistery and episcopal palace.\u00a0Extremely significant are the mosaics from the 6th century in the apse and the capitals of the pillars that support the Romanesque arches of the side naves with carved motifs of birds, fruits and flowers.\u00a0In 1997, the entire complex was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.<\/p>\n<h5>6.\u00a0Cathedral of St. James and St. Nicola&#8217;s fortress in \u0160ibenik<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57150\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/sibenik-cathedral-croatia-unesco.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/sibenik-cathedral-croatia-unesco.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/sibenik-cathedral-croatia-unesco-768x534.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/sibenik-cathedral-croatia-unesco-600x417.jpg 600w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/sibenik-cathedral-croatia-unesco-1320x919.jpg 1320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Cathedral of St. James in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sibenik-tourism.hr\/en\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">\u0160ibenik<\/span><\/a> is one of the most significant architectural achievements of the 15th and 16th centuries in Croatia, and unique monument of European sacral architecture.\u00a0Construction began in 1431 and lasted until 1536. It is specific\u00a0that it is completely built of stone without the use of any bonding material.\u00a0Due to its exceptional values, the cathedral was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>St. Nichola&#8217;s fortress is situated at the entrance to the St. Anthony&#8217;s Channel.\u00a0It is a unique Renaissance building of a Venetian fortification and an exceptional monument of world&#8217;s architectural heritage.\u00a0In 2017, the fortress was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the nomination&#8221;The Defence System of the Republic of Venice between the 16th and 17th Centuries&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h5>7. Stari Grad plain on Hvar island<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56658\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/island-hvar-croatia-unesco.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/island-hvar-croatia-unesco.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/island-hvar-croatia-unesco-768x524.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/island-hvar-croatia-unesco-600x409.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The large plain, in the centre of the island of <a href=\"https:\/\/visithvar.hr\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">Hvar<\/span><\/span><\/a>, changed its name as its masters changed: the Greek\u00a0<em>Khora Pharu<\/em>, the Roman\u00a0<em>Ager Pharens<\/em>is, the Medieval\u00a0<em>Campus Sancti Stephani<\/em>\u00a0(the Plain of St. Stephen), and finally today\u2019s\u00a0Stari Grad Plain.\u00a0The field was a well organized system of numerous agricultural estates. Many\u00a0vineyards and olive groves have remained \u2018unchanged\u2019 since the first colonization of the ancient Greek and have remained a unique testimony to the geometric system of land division used in Antiquity.<br \/>\nSince it is\u00a0great example of the best preserved\u00a0land division on the Mediterranean, the\u00a0Stari Grad plain\u00a0was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008 together with the old town of the Stari Grad.<\/p>\n<h5>8. Ste\u0107ci-Medieval tombstones<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56657\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/stecak-thombstone-croatia-unesco.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/stecak-thombstone-croatia-unesco.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/stecak-thombstone-croatia-unesco-768x573.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/stecak-thombstone-croatia-unesco-600x447.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ste\u0107ak is a common name for a stone tombstone from the Middle Ages decorated with rudimentary paintings.\u00a0They are located in the wider area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the northwestern parts of Montenegro, the western parts of Serbia and the southern parts of Croatia, mainly in Dalmatia.\u00a0The largest number of ste\u0107ak tombstones dates to period between the 12th and 16th centuries.\u00a0Necropolises in Croatia with ste\u0107ak tombstones are located at the following locations: Cista Velika in the Imotski region and near the church of St. Barbara in Konavle.\u00a0In 2016, the ste\u0107ak tombstones were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.<\/p>\n<h5>9.\u00a0Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe (Northern Velebit and Paklenica National park)<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56656\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Paklenica-National-Park-croatia-unesco.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Paklenica-National-Park-croatia-unesco.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Paklenica-National-Park-croatia-unesco-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Paklenica-National-Park-croatia-unesco-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Velebit is the largest Croatian mountain. In Velebit Nature Park there are two national parks: Northern Velebit and Paklenica.\u00a0In 2017.\u00a0beech forests in the area of NP Paklenica are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.\u00a0Their exceptional value worthy of UNESCO protection is based on originality, age, geographical location and size.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/np-paklenica.hr\/en\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">Paklenica National Park<\/span><\/span><\/a> with its magnificent canyons and forests is certainly one of the most beautiful parts of the Velebit massif.<\/p>\n<h5>10. The Defence System of the Republic of Venice between the 16th and 17th Centuries (Zadar and St. Nicola&#8217;s fortress in \u0160ibenik)<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56655\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/city-walls-zadar-croatia-unesco.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"589\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/city-walls-zadar-croatia-unesco.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/city-walls-zadar-croatia-unesco-768x565.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/city-walls-zadar-croatia-unesco-600x441.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Zadar was once the largest fortress city in the Republic of Venice and its city walls were an important part of a complex defense system.\u00a0Zadar\u00a0with its\u00a0city walls, together with other components of Venetian defense works\u00a0during 16th and 17th centuries, located in today&#8217;s Croatia, Italy and Montenegro, joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017 as an outstanding monument of a modern maritime fortress.\u00a0The most striking part of Zadar&#8217;s city walls is the Land Gate, the main historical entrance to the city built in 1543 by Michele Sanmicheli, a famous Venetian architect.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Croatia&#8217;s UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5>1. Ojkanje singing<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fjm9QXUVYLA\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">Ojkanje<\/span><\/a> is a special way of singing the syllables hoj, voj, oj.\u00a0It is the oldest way of singing in Croatia, which is still cherished in the Dalmatian hinterland.\u00a0The shout of &#8220;oj&#8221; would be transmitted by the wind and this way the neighbors were warned of the danger of wolves\u00a0while tending\u00a0sheep.\u00a0The song would be composed after\u00a0the other shepherd from another hill would reply and confirm that he received the message. That way shepherds\u00a0were\u00a0also searching for their flock sheep on the mountain slopes.<\/p>\n<h5>2. Two-part singing and playing in the Istrian scale<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r4MMVAl7fFo\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">Two-part singing and playing in the Istrian scale<\/span><\/a> is unique\u00a0type of folk singing by two singers in Istria, one of whom sings in falsetto and the other in a normal key, accompanied by the unusual sounds on traditional instruments.\u00a0The\u00a0complexity of performing songs lays in fact that in order for singers to achieve characteristic tones, they have to partially sing even through the nose.<\/p>\n<h5>3. Klapa multipart singing of Dalmatia<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sciwtWcfdH4\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">Klapa multipart singing of Dalmatia<\/span><\/span><\/a> is\u00a0the skill of\u00a0multipart singing a capella, without instrumental accompaniment.\u00a0Klapa singing draws its tradition from the Mediterranean culture, in small coastal towns\u00a0and on the islands, the boys would gathered in klapa and sang in the company of friends, mostly without instruments.\u00a0Usually the song is started by one singer, followed by other voices.<\/p>\n<h5>4. Be\u0107arac singing and playing from Eastern Croatia<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6_Kw18DWHP4\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">Be\u0107arac<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0traditional vocal-instrumental singing in the area of Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem with frequent jokes and mockery, love and erotic connotations.<\/p>\n<h5>5.\u00a0Annual carnival bell ringers pageant from the Kastav area<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">Annual carnival bell ringers pageant from the Kastav area<\/span><\/span> is a\u00a0procession of bell ringers and their traditional carnival celebration.\u00a0A group of masked people with huge animal masks, covered with sheepskins, winches with axes and clubs with a lot of ringing, noise and almost magical dances\u00a0walks through the surrounding villages.\u00a0The first records of organized bell ringers date back to the 19th century, but the roots go deeper into the past.<\/p>\n<h5>6. Nijemo Kolo, silent circle dance of the Dalmatian hinterland<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=69LOMscp5QU\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">Nijemo kolo<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from the area of the Dalmatian hinterland is a dance without music.\u00a0Heavy, but completely rhythmic beats with traditional\u00a0leather shoes\u00a0&#8220;opanak&#8221; on the dance floor are indicating the dancers, to speed up or slow down the step in a circular motion.\u00a0Nijemo kolo\u00a0was performed at traditional celebrations of local saints, and a guy would dance next to a girl, occasionally introducing her to the circle\u00a0to let everyone know that it was a\u00a0filrting and that the girl belonged to him.<\/p>\n<h5>7.
