{"id":49041,"date":"2020-05-05T02:05:37","date_gmt":"2020-05-05T01:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/?p=49041"},"modified":"2024-05-17T08:59:42","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T06:59:42","slug":"zadar-cultural-route","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/en\/zadar-cultural-route\/","title":{"rendered":"Discover Zadar cultural route"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Zadar is a city of 3,000 years long and turbulent history, marked by frequent devastation after which it was rebuilt again from the ruins.\u00a0Numerous cultural\u00a0monuments of exceptional value attest different historical\u00a0periods and cultures that have left their mark on the urban appearance of the city and the everyday life of its inhabitants.\u00a0For over 1000 years Zadar was the capital of Dalmatia and played an exceptional historical role in certain periods.<br \/>\nToday, with about 71.000 inhabitans, it is known as one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic with many historical monuments and the most beautiful sunset in the world.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a fan of history and cultural sites then you will enjoy our Zadar cultural route.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/zadar-cultural-route-magic-croatia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49069\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/zadar-cultural-route-magic-croatia.jpg\" alt=\"zadar-cultural-route-magic-croatia\" width=\"800\" height=\"526\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brief history of Zadar:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From 9th century Zadar was already inhabited by the Illyrian tribe called <strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liburnians\">Liburni<\/a><\/span><\/strong> because of its convenient location in the center of the Croatian coast with a protected harbor, fertile hinterland and favorable climate.\u00a0In ancient times, this area was the most urbanized on the entire eastern Adriatic coast, and from the 1st century BC\u00a0Zadar became part of the Roman Empire until its final collapse.<br \/>\nIn the 7th century, Zadar became the capital of the Byzantine <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dalmatia_(Roman_province)\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\">province of Dalmatia<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and a strategic point on the waterway from Venice to Constantinople.<br \/>\nThe city first came under Venetian rule in the 12th century, with occasional rebellions and liberation, remained part of <strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republic_of_Venice\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Venetian Republic<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong> until 1797 when Napoleon&#8217;s troops abolished the millennial existence of the Venetian Republic.<br \/>\nAfter that, Zadar was taken over by the Austrians, and in 1806 it was briefly taken over by the French, who left a significant mark on the city&#8217;s history.<br \/>\nSubsequently, Zadar again belonged to Austrian rule until 1918\u00a0when it was annexed to Italy as an enclave on the eastern Adriatic coast.\u00a0It remained under Italian government until the end of World War II, during which 80% of the city&#8217;s historic core was destroyed during heavy Allied bombing.\u00a0The city was almost completely destroyed and abandoned, but finally annexed to Croatia within the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.<br \/>\nIt was not until the declaration of independence of the Republic of Croatia from Yugoslavia in 1991 that Zadar became a city in the independent Republic of Croatia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Check out our recommendation of the cultural route through Zadar:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1.\u00a0Remains of Roman urbanization\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/zadar-forum-magic-croatia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49066\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/zadar-forum-magic-croatia.jpg\" alt=\"zadar-forum-magic-croatia\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Google maps location: <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Roman+Forum\/@44.0952083,15.2457828,14z\/data=!4m8!1m2!2m1!1sforum+zadar!3m4!1s0x4761fa6de8461883:0x6a0096312587a124!8m2!3d44.1156598!4d15.2245704\"><u>Roman Forum in Zadar<\/u><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Zadar probably became a Roman colony during the reign of Emperor Augustus 27th year BC. By the founding of the Jader colony (Zadar) acquired the characteristics of an ancient city: an emporium or market place, the thermae, a city basilica for public gatherings, a nymph (fountain), a capitolium temple dedicated to Roman deities, and the largest forum built on the eastern coast of the Adriatic, surrounded on three sides by a porch and numerous stores.<br \/>\nThe regular\u00a0network of the streets on the peninsula has been preserved to this day,\u00a0while the remains of the Roman Forum are exposed in-situ and you can discover numerous parts of Roman architecture.<\/p>\n<p><em>Extra tip:\u00a0<\/em>opposite the Forum is the <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/amzd.hr\/en\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Archaeological Museum<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, the second oldest museum in Croatia, in which are exhibited statues of Roman emperors, numerous items used by the Romans in everyday life (cutlery, sewing, medical instruments, etc.), and you can\u00a0see how their family houses looked like, find out what the residents of Zadar did at the time, how they dressed and more about their religious rituals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. Zadar Episcopal Complex<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/zadar-cathedral-cultural-route-zadar-magic-croatia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49072\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/zadar-cathedral-cultural-route-zadar-magic-croatia.jpg\" alt=\"zadar-cathedral-cultural-route-zadar-magic-croatia\" width=\"800\" height=\"590\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Google maps location:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Cathedral+of+St.+Anastasia\/@44.1163973,15.2221789,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x4761fa70dd69c9b3:0xdcc6e5ed407fe42b!8m2!3d44.1163935!4d15.2243729\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cathedral of St. Anastasia<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the 4th century, a new religion &#8211; Christianity &#8211; developed in the city.\u00a0It is somewhat strange that it was at an antique, pagan forum that Christians raised their first baptistery, the Episcopal Palace and the Basilica of St. Peter that was later rebuilt into the largest cathedral in Dalmatia, dedicated to St. Anastasia.<br \/>\nToday&#8217;s facade was created when the cathedral was extended by 14 m in the 14th century. It is less known that Pope Alexander III prayed at the church during his visit to Zadar in 1177.<br \/>\nEntrance to the cathedral is free unless Mass is being held, so do not miss the opportunity to study the interior of the church and the beautiful choir seats made in floral gothic by the Venetian master Matteo Moronzon, the marble sarcophagus from the 9th century, which has\u00a0the relics of St. Anastasia and\u00a0remains of very high quality\u00a0frescoes from the 13th century.<br \/>\nThe church bell tower was built up to the first floor in the 15th century, and from the first floor to the top it was built in Neo-Romanesque style according to the design of the English architect Thomas Graham Jackson, who is known for the construction of the main buildings of the University of Oxford.<\/p>\n<p><em>Extra tip: <\/em>climb the church bell tower which is open to the public and enjoy views of the old town, ancient forum, sea and nearby islands.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>3. Pre-Romanesque Church of St. Donatus<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/st-donatus-church-zadar-magic-croatia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49075\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/st-donatus-church-zadar-magic-croatia.jpg\" alt=\"st-donatus-church-zadar-magic-croatia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Google maps location:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Church+of+St.+Donatus\/@44.1158627,15.2222836,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x4761fa6df2e1ee49:0x7a598c5676530850!8m2!3d44.1158589!4d15.2244776\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">St. Donatus church<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Church of the St. Donatus is the most famous architectural monument and almost a symbol of the recognition of the city of Zadar.\u00a0According to tradition, it was built by the Bishop of Zadar in the 9th century and was originally dedicated to St.\u00a0Trinity, and it is only since the 15th century that it is named after Bishop Donatus, who\u00a0built it.\u00a0The church is reminiscent of a Byzantine presence, and stands out due to its size, cylindrical shape and its double interior with a gallery on the first floor that can be reached by a staircase.<br \/>\nThe church is\u00a0not being used for sacred function anymore, which means that it has not been holding a mass for many years, and it is interesting that from the end of the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century, Zadar&#8217;s\u00a0Archaeological museum exhibited there.<\/p>\n<p><em>Extra tip:<\/em> the church of St. Donatus has outstanding acoustic characteristics and during the summer,\u00a0for over 50 years, it has been hosting the internationally renowned &#8220;Musical Evenings in St. Donatus&#8221; festival.\u00a0During your stay in Zadar,\u00a0make sure to check out the concert schedule and enjoy some of the finest performances by international and local musicians.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>4.\u00a0The gold and the silver of Zadar<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/gold-silver-zadar-cultural-route-magic-croatia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49078\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/gold-silver-zadar-cultural-route-magic-croatia.jpg\" alt=\"gold-silver-zadar-cultural-route-magic-croatia\" width=\"800\" height=\"566\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Google maps location: <strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/St.+Mary's+Church,+Zadar\/@44.1151159,15.2228321,17z\/data=!4m8!1m2!2m1!1scrkva+sv+marije+zadar!3m4!1s0x4761e4d5ca972fe7:0x630f1dead11ef70c!8m2!3d44.1150439!4d15.2251861\"><u>Church of St. Mary<\/u><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Benedictine convent was founded in 1066 and is of great importance not only to Zadar but also beyond. In the monastery archive are kept documents from the times of the Croatian royal dynasty.\u00a0The Croat-Hungarian King Koloman during his stay in Zadar in the 12th century raised the bell tower to the church of St. Mary.\u00a0He puts up a sign with his name and the year 1105 when the bell tower was built, which is still visible today at the first floor level.<\/p>\n<p>Zadar Gold and Silver is the name for the Permanent Exhibition of Church Art, one of the most valuable exhibitions in Croatia,\u00a0set within\u00a0the monastery.\u00a0The exhibition includes a large number of works of art, sacral paintings, statues, embroidery, lace and valuable goldsmiths from the Romanesque and Gothic periods, as well as a small number of works from the late Gothic and Baroque.<br \/>\nThe oldest objects in the exhibition are a pectoral cross from the 8th century and two silver relics with the powers of St. Arontius and St. Jacob from 11th century.\u00a0The most interesting object is the crown of Queen Elizabeth Kotromani\u0107 and the polyptych altars of St.\u00a0Martin\u00a0by Vittore Carpaccio.<\/p>\n<p><em>Extra tip:\u00a0<\/em>visit the Gold and Silver Zadar exhibition with the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/en\/walking-tour\/\">guidance of a licensed guide<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, or buy a collection catalog that has been translated into multiple languages to learn more about the exhibited items.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>5.\u00a0St. Simon&#8217;s casket\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cultural-route-zadar-simon-chest-magic-croatia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49090\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cultural-route-zadar-simon-chest-magic-croatia.jpg\" alt=\"cultural-route-zadar-simon-chest-magic-croatia\" width=\"800\" height=\"545\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Google maps location: <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/St.+Simeon's+Church\/@44.1134469,15.2264564,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x4761fb9c10937bb7:0x2de82dbb02063ad9!8m2!3d44.1134431!4d15.2286504\"><u>Church of St. Simeon<\/u><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Church of St. Simeon was originally built in the 5th century and dedicated to St.\u00a0Stephen.\u00a0Centuries later, it was expanded and rebuilt, but the original elements of the earlier church still remain.\u00a0It was last remodeled in the 17th century when the body and chest of St. Simeon was brought to the church.\u00a0Silver chest of St. Simeon has dimensions of\u00a0197 x 80 x 110 cm and holds the mummified body of St. Simeon.\u00a0The chest weighs about 350 kg and is made of silver and gilded sheet metal at the request of Queen Elizabeth, wife of Croatian-Hungarian King\u00a0Louis I.<\/p>\n<p><em>Extra tip:<\/em>\u00a0the chest\u00a0binds an interesting legend, and the chest itself is covered\u00a0with many scenes depicting the arrival of King\u00a0Luis I\u00a0in Zadar, finding the hidden body of St. Simeon, scenes from the life of St. Simeon and many others, some of which have not yet been fully figured out.\u00a0Be sure to consult your local guide to find out more.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>6. The first university in Croatia<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/zadar-university-magic-croatia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49081\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/zadar-university-magic-croatia.jpg\" alt=\"zadar-university-magic-croatia\" width=\"800\" height=\"517\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Google maps location:\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/University+of+Zadar\/@44.111428,15.2238795,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x4761fa6fb79130d1:0x55ae58518bb47179!8m2!3d44.1114242!4d15.2260735\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">University of Zadar<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Dominicans founded in Zadar in 1396, as part of the monastery of St. Dominic,\u00a0the first university &#8211; <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unizd.hr\/eng\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Universitas Jadertina<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span> with a study of theology and philosophy, which has been open to public.\u00a0It was the first university in Croatia but also in this part of Europe.\u00a0The work of the university was interrupted by the Napoleon administration in 1807, and after that the modern development of higher education in Zadar began in 1955.\u00a0Today, the University of Zadar is the largest fully integrated university in the Republic of Croatia, with 27 university departments for: archeology, economics, geography, germanistics, italian studies, information science, art history of health studies, history, marine department and many others.<\/p>\n<p><em>Extra tip:\u00a0<\/em>Today&#8217;s university building is located on the beautiful waterfront in Zadar, but\u00a0make sure to visit the church of St. Dominic in the old town, the cradle of long tradition of university education in Croatia<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>7. The first novel in Croatian language<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Google maps location:\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Trg+Svetog+Kr%C5%A1evana,+23000,+Zadar\/@44.1162952,15.2253948,19z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x4761fa6e06da5feb:0x2e5e737324964c97!8m2!3d44.1162942!4d15.2259433\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the statue of Petar Zorani\u0107<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Petar Zoranic was a nobleman from Zadar and a writer who wrote the first Croatian novel &#8220;Mountains&#8221; in 1569.\u00a0The novel describes the seven-day journey of shepherd Zoran through the hinterland of Zadar, Velebit and Dinara mountains, on which he sets out seeking a cure for unrequited love.\u00a0Along the way, he meets pastors who narrate their homeland and compete in singing different songs, as well as a villa that mourns the neglect of the Croatian language.<br \/>\nThe statue of Petar Zorani\u0107 was made in 1969 by a local sculptor.<\/p>\n<p><em>Extra tip:<\/em>\u00a0after visiting the square of St. Chrysogonus, where the statue of Petar Zorani\u0107 is placed, do not miss the chance to see back of the church of St. Chrysogonus, one of the finest examples\u00a0of Romanesque architecture in Dalmatia<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>8. Venice Defense System, UNESCO\u00a0site<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/land-gate-cultural-route-zadar-magic-croatia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49087\" src=\"https:\/\/magic-croatia.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/land-gate-cultural-route-zadar-magic-croatia.jpg\" alt=\"land-gate-cultural-route-zadar-magic-croatia\" width=\"800\" height=\"565\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Google maps location: <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Land+Gate\/@44.1122057,15.2263451,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x4761fa6f47c35173:0xea3be3a11a57dc9d!8m2!3d44.1122019!4d15.2285391\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Land Gate<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The land gate was once the main entrance to the city.\u00a0They were built in 1543 at a time of danger from the Ottoman conquest of the city.\u00a0They were designed by famed Venetian military architect Michele Sanmicheli.\u00a0Because the city walls were dilapidated to facilitate the city&#8217;s defense, the Venetian government was forced to rebuild the city walls and develop a city defense strategy.\u00a0A defensive canal filled with water was built on the new city walls as well.\u00a0Ponton (today known as Queen Jelena Park) served as a monumental bastion to defend the city.
